Christmas Cookies

Ok, I know this is way overdue, but I thought I should share this in a post anyway as an idea for next Christmas or even adapted to a Valentine’s day treat. Just need to adapt the theme and done!

This winter I made a delicious slow cooker creamy mushroom soup and I used a lot of, hum, mushrooms! All of them went to my soup recipe and I was left with a couple of these blue plastic containers that I did not want to discard. Ops, just revealed my secret, I love to repurpose most everything, and that includes packaging. This particular container is made with a sturdy plastic, I kept the ones that came with the mushrooms because I thought I could use them to organize my daughter’s craft supplies. But then, as I was baking the chocolate chip cookies, I had the idea to use them as baskets instead of making ones out of paper plates based on the neat idea I found on the website evermine.com.

Luckly I had this lovely sparkly blue snowman gift paper wrap that I bought specially for my little girl at the Dollar Tree store. Bela loves blue and everything that is sparkly! 🙂 Wow, this paper was perfect for the blue container, I couldn’t believe it. Made me happy. Ok, so I gave all the mushroom containers a good wash and let them dry really well.

I then cut a strip of this gorgeous wrapping paper and glued around each container. I also made some gift tags cutting the snowman. I glued to a piece of white poster board I had so the tag had more body. As a finishing touch, I rounded all the tag corners and punched a hole on the top. I have to say, I was happy how it all turned out, and even happier that I did not have to spend a dime more for this project, I used everything I already had home!

I baked delicious chocolate chip cookies and also made a batch of store bought wafer chocolate cookies that I dipped into milk chocolate and sprinkled Christmas colored sprinkles. I made these same cookies for the school Christmas concert at my daughter’s school. The only difference  was the chocolate, for the cookies I sent to her concert, I used white chocolate. I melted and dipped each wafer cookie in it, then sprinkled these white, red and green sprinkles. I still had 2 packages of chocolate wafer cookies left, the Christmas sprinkles and milk chocolate, all the white one was done! I found the idea for these dipped cookies on the website theidearoom.net.

After all the goodies were done and cool, it was time to fill up the little baskets! I did put some white tissue paper, which I also already had home, in the containers to cushion the cookies. To wrap everything up, I covered each basket in gallon freezer bags, closed the zip, put a nice bow, added the tag and placed with the cookies, a cube package of tissue paper. Done! This was all made with love to show my lovely neighbors how much we appreciate them.

Kids’ Fingerprint Christmas Cards

I love fingerprint art, there are so many creative ideas to explore! Not to mention that is is a fun, censorial and unique way to have little ones produce their own handmade crafts. I immediately remembered this fingerprint technique when I received the weekly letter from my little girl’s school, I so much appreciate those weekly communications, by the way, it makes me happy to know what is going on in her school. In the letter, the principal invited the families to help, if they could, with the Adopt a Grandparent Program. It is a thoughtful initiative that will provide joy to 500 nursing home residents at Christmas time. It warmed my heart when I read that and I knew I wanted to be part of it, even if my family’s contribution was small. All she was asking was for families to give as many handmade Christmas cards as possible to be attached on the gift baskets to be given the residents.

I started searching what materials I had on hand in order to produce these cards and I found a stack of five 8.5″ x 11″ poster board sheets and some left over acrylic craft paint that would work well with this fingerprint technique. I also remembered I had brand new ink cartridges in my home inkjet printer! All set to create and make! 🙂

I did go online to research some ideas and found interesting handmade cards on pinterest. But the one that stood out the most was the fingerprint Christmas light craft for kids I found on the Crafty Morning by crafty mom Michelle. You can check her work by clicking on thins link to her website: http://www.craftymorning.com/fingerprint-christmas-light-craft-for/

So here is what I came up with:

You can download the art of this Christmas card or Christmas gift tag on the link below and produce it yourself! Just have to mention a couple of things:

  • In each 8.5″ x 11″ sheet you have 4 cards
  • On the PDF document you will notice a light gray horizontal line and another light gray vertical line crossing the horizontal one in the middle, these lines are cutting lines
  • In order to cut the cards, I used a 12″ metal ruler, a heavy duty utility knife and a cutting board
  • It’s easier to cut your cards after they are painted and fully dried

My daughter loved painting these cards, look at her little pointer finger printing some nice Christmas lights!

Time to let all the paint dry so we can cut all the cards.

This is the final product: Fingerprint Christmas lights cards for 20 of the 500 Adopt a Grandparent Christmas basket. My little girl was so proud of her work and happy to contribute to this wonderful project.

I am happy with the result and wish the recipients of these cards along with the gift baskets, have a merry Christmas!

I hope you enjoyed this little project as much as me and my girl did and can use my template for your own little production. See you in another post!
